About
Maurice Bernstein is the co-founder and CEO of Giant Step, the award-winning New York music company that began in 1990 as a weekly party called Groove Academy. Raised in the north of England on Northern Soul, he landed in New York in the late 1980s and built Giant Step into the underground club where Daft Punk, Massive Attack, Jamiroquai and Digable Planets made early American appearances, then into a record label (Nuyorican Soul, Ron Trent, Gilles Peterson) and a creative agency that has worked with Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Janelle Monáe, EDITION Hotels, Samsung, Intel and ABSOLUT, winning Clio awards along the way.
After a long hiatus he was persuaded to DJ again. He now plays regularly in New York, Brooklyn and Miami, with sets at Spiritland in London and alongside Gilles Peterson on Worldwide FM.
Strictly vinyl, his sets lean into rare soul, funk, jazz and early disco: the record collection of someone who lived it, for rooms that love great music rather than the usual DJ set.
